It is a free study, and high key shots are what I decided to work on. I used a few of my kids toys, but liked this shot the best. I used a long exposure plus a flash (Metz 54MZ-4 with sto-fen bounce), natural light and the light above me. It was a lot of fun and I definitely learned a tiny bit! I did some sharpening on PS as I was not totally happy with the sharpness I was getting with the panda after I chose it over the others.

I like the high key, but would have liked to see a bit more detail in the panda.

I have now tried this on three monitors and I have to say that I still can barely make out the bear. Nice idea though. I think I'll absent myself from voting.

I like the idea and the negative space to the left of the shot.

A little bit too high key for me.

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy):

Positives: I'm a fan of high key images and I like the way you lose this panda in the background, I also like the way I can perceive a little bit of red / orange in the background making me question whether this is a black & white or a colour image.

Critical thoughts: I'm going to be completely honest with you and say that I'd question some of your choices here - firstly, the subject matter isn't the most interesting thing you could have put in front of the camera and the focus, though most likely deliberately off, frustrates rather than fascinates. Compositionally, I just want to move it in the frame a little, but perhaps that is your purpose here, to offer an image which makes us question convention.

Overall, I don't like it, but I hope you do.

To me this is more overexposed than high key due to the lack of detail in the bear.
