Talk about last minute photos. I took this with just a little over an hour left in the challenge. Good timing. Though, I am betting that someone else thought of it and will have some better equipment or location. :-)

Still, I always enjoy shooting the moon, and this was a great chance to do it in a challenge week. It was a terribly hazy night. The hot humid summers of North Carolina are in full force. This was taken from my back porch, in a neighborhood with lots of street lights and ambient city light. Certainly not the best conditions for astro-photography. Certainly not my best shot of the moon, but I typically take pictures of the moon in the winter when the air is dry and crisp.

Image was imported from RAW into Photoshop CS3, adjusting temperature and clarity. In Photoshop, sharpened more, added adjustment layer for levels, cropped for challenge dimensions.

Nice shot Scott. You really have to get lucky to get a nice crisp image of the moon in the summer. Good choice for the challenge!

Thanks for the comments!

No telescopes in this photo. This is camera, tripod, and zoom lens. Boy, I wish I had a telescope.

The haze from all the humidity really made a difference in the clarity. Here is another photo I took some time ago without so much haze.

I also like shooting the moon when it is not full. When there is an event horizon along the surface, it really shows off the detail in the craters.

BTW, it was shot in color. The problem was it was too warm as the moon has a rather yellow incandescent look to it at the angle it was shot. When importing into Photoshop, I lowered the photo's temp a bit.

Any season but summer can yield some pretty clear conditions in North Carolina. I'd really like to give it a try from Grandfather Mountain.

Whow - you must have a great zoom lens, or did you hook it up to your telescope??

now there is a great circle...just a bit to centered but that does not distract from the great picture...
