I was kind of lazy when it came to the recent pigeon challenge and ended up making an eleventh hour effort to get something. I went to nearby park Mellon Park after work one day (the same place I captured this) to see what was happening. Now I rarely engage subjects on the street for their picture, but there was a very content old gentleman feeding the pigeons, and so I approached him. "No, I'm all over the internet already." Fair enough. Then Cheryl approached me. She was nearby and also enjoying these birds. She said I could take some shots of her if I would e-mail them to her.

I had no idea how friendly these birds really were! I've seen pictures -- there's a famous one of David Hemmings as a boy and they're all over him. And once I got within a five foot radius of Cheryl, they were all over me -- on my shoulder, on my head, on my camera lens. I had to explain to my wife the pigeon poop on my navy blue pants.

I ended up not entering the challenge. This shot was the best, but the background was overexposed, and I just didn't have time to work on it. And what I ended up with, I'm not sure would have been legal anyway. Challenge restrictions aside, I thought I'd go for a high-key look. I removed most of the background, and faded in the rest. I followed up with some dodging and burning and a mild high pass sharpen. A rare example of extensive post-processing from me...

She is going to love this beautiful shot. High key works perfectly and highlights the birds and their feeder.

aww..great capture, PP and use of the B*W transition..reminds me of one of those "spiritual" images you might find in a Native American art store..

I think the PP works beautifully for this, the movement of the pigeons is highlighted without distraction. It also gives the image an ethereal effect which is quite exceptional. This would work very nicely as a book illustration.

I think your high-key approach for this pic is perfect. The focus is centered on the lady's interaction/relationship with the pigeons. Challenge rules aside, I think you did a great job on the processing to show a story with this pic.

I LOVE the wing in front of her face! I also love that group of three off to the left. And I'm quite sure she's going to love this. Very nice work! (And yeah, probably an illegal edit but what the heck. Glad you got out to shoot the pigeons!!)

This is a great edit of what you originally showed me. It really draws the attention to the activity going on. Amazing what the right editing will do! The original would have probably gotten creamed in voting. Too bad what you had to do with it wasn't challenge legal.

Oh, and thanks for the great title for mine.
