It's a VERY unique and interesting picture.. but I wonder if you could have taken this picture without the reflection of yourself in it? It would look more "natural" instead of the mercury being PUT there in the first place. And if you plan to do this again.. maybe pick another spot on your railing that doesn't have the scratches on it??

Thanks to everyone who commented on this photograph. And as Kavey said, the photo is Indeed in color, its just the texture of the wood and the mercury's chromatic reflextion makes it look B & W.

Re one of the comments below, unless I am really losing it this IS in colour isn't it?? I am surprised you didn't score more highly - I think this is one of the better photos of this challenge!

Is that fall leaves reflected in the mercury? cool! wish you could have gotten even closer! neat textures contrasting the smooth feel of the droplets.

Looks great. But you know that inhaling the gas from mercury is veryy undhealthy? Anyway. A good photo. I like the textures and their contrast to each other (rough natural wood vs. slick glossy liquid mercury). -stephan

great concept, but not overwhelming. hold on to your mercury, do something for www.mirrorproject.com

You could have done some really sweet reflections, and you didn't. How did you murchace the mercury???
11/16/2002 08:30:00 PM
i really like this.

Very nice and quite unique. It's not ez to come up with something different among 300 peers. YOU DID IT!!! I like the reflections too. Good job! Good luck in the challenge. Grayce :-)

Really unusual, but sharp in all the right places!

I am sorry I don't have time to vote this week - I am just skimming through the photos very quickly.
This is just beautiful, I love the reflections in the mercury and the texture of the wood.
I think I'd prefer sharp focus right through, front to back.
It's a beautiful shot and if I were voting would be a 9 or 10.

Excellent idea. I like the way you controlled the color.
11/14/2002 12:43:00 PM
ugh, i hope you cleaned that up carefully after the photo. i was just listening to a report about mercury on the radio this morning ...
challenge -- met. creative idea.
technical -- very nice focus and reflection.
composition -- love the wood texture. i think i would've tried cropping this a little tighter, taking some off the top and the right side.

Unique idea - like the reflections. Would like to see it cropped more.

We used to put mercury on dimes in science class - many years ago. Before they really found out it was too poisonious to handle. Beautiful reflection in it. I still have some old mercury switches to show my grandchildren. Great shot. Good subject. Would like to have seen this in color to show how silver in color it is. But still a 9 in my book, photo wise. PTL (Color would have been a 10 - sorry. That's a personal thing I realize)

Very dangerous mercury is, but nice shot!

Great framing. This composition lends itself to B&W just fine. I've always been kind of intrigued by Quicksilver. Good luck - Inspzil

Interesting idea. image would be better if greater magnification to see detail. Clean mercury gives good reflection
11/12/2002 07:39:00 AM
Neat idea. Where did you get the mercury from? Would have been a super photo if you had gotten closer to the drops to see more of the reflection they offered.
11/12/2002 04:54:00 AM
I would love to see something closer and with more interesting colors being reflected. Mercury is so intriguing!
11/12/2002 02:50:00 AM
Might have been better more tightly cropped with a plain background.
11/11/2002 11:23:00 PM
Wow. That's awesome.
11/11/2002 09:50:00 PM
Great shot! I love the monochromatic feel and the texture as well. Really excellent. DPz
11/11/2002 07:53:00 PM
Great composition, excellent choice of subject.
11/11/2002 06:59:00 PM
not a bad photo, just a little uninteresting, good lighting. Maybe a little different composition, like all in one ball and some kind of reflection in it, or something? I don't really know.
11/11/2002 03:44:00 PM
Great focus and lighting. Did you try it so that the biggest bead wasn't so centered? Don't know if it would have changed anything or not. karmat
11/11/2002 03:25:00 PM
I like the wood and the shinyness
11/11/2002 03:10:00 PM
Perhaps a little closer to see what the mercury was reflecting would have been even more impressive. Good photo, though.
11/11/2002 02:15:00 PM
Good composition. Tell me, how did you clean this up?
11/11/2002 01:15:00 PM
Oh my! We're all going to die! haha! Nice shot. Really too bad the sky wasn't blue when you took the shot. Jacko.
11/11/2002 12:50:00 PM
Great idea, well shot.
the only thing that bothers me is the scratch that runs down the frame.
11/11/2002 09:34:00 AM
great picture...
11/11/2002 02:28:00 AM
I like the idea. Just some suggestion if you get closer to get the reflexion, play with colour both background and the subject.
11/11/2002 01:11:00 AM
Nice shot, but would like to see the mercury even closer.
