The Barnett Shale underlies the city of Fort Worth. Recent technological advancements in horizontal drilling have allowed natural gas to be extracted from this rock that was previously inaccessible. I usually pass a couple of these exploratory rigs on my way to work. They get moved around pretty regularly.

This isn't the shot I had envisioned. I was not able to get the rising sun striking the rig as I wanted. The result looked oddly colored and I felt it worked better in sepia. There was a rig in the field where I shot my ribbon winning tree about a year ago. Too bad it was not still there. I get some stupendous sunrises across that field. I shot this one about a year back in that location:

Pre-challenge notes:
Not expecting too much from this one, but you never know. I've gone to the trouble, I might as well toss it in and see how it does.

Anticipated critiques:
-I expect a few people to not see any relevance of a drilling rig to geology. This is the practical application of the science. I am certain the gas company that operates this rig keeps many geologists employed.
-Not expecting a lot of other critiques, just a whole lot of 5's without comments.

Post-challenge notes:
Did as hoped for and better than anticipated, coming in just over my site average. This was one of the few entries that did not feature rocks or a landscape to illustrate the topic. Judging from the handful of comments, everyone saw the relevance.
