What a great abstract!
And a point/shoot is the best way to go! I use a Canon G9 - and was chased out of WalMart's plant section too!

Nice and abstract.. I do like the colours you've achieved to make it look all painterly. But the original image has it merits too. I would prefer if you went for a monochromatic approach to get out those divine details.
