 This is my first attempt ever at trying portraits. My little sister was so kind to pose for me as I played around with it. I wanted to more see what my new setup would do (just got a light, backdrop stand, and backdrop paper for my birthday – was a surprise to me, my mother found them second hand from a local photographer), but I had a few photos turn out so I figured I would post them. I have a slate gray backdrop and one light (did not use the flash – just used the model light). I also played around with the editing, since I have never tried to edit a portrait before. I hope I didn’t over process it. Also, I am editing on my crappy dell laptop – so I hope what you see is at least similar to what I see on this monitor!

Nice clarity, interesting pose. Lighting looks pretty good. The colors look fine on my calibrated monitor by the way.

For a portrait with drama (which I see here) I wouldn't have the subject so centered. The negative space would be fine if on one side or the other. Black all around the subject makes here look smaller or farther away from us the viewer. For effect get in closer and have your subject to the left or right of the frame leaving some of the negative space.
