Challenge: Table Shot III (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-450D Rebel XSi
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Location: Home
Date: Apr 30, 2009
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/80
Galleries: Self Portrait
Date Uploaded: May 3, 2009

I set the camera on the top of a 20" TV, hope that counts. I took this before going to work one morning, ...almost late. The sun was shining through the window and it just looked like the perfect light for a picture, so I set it up and this was the best pose of 5. Cropped and changed to B&W.

I think it's a nice shot (I agree with the other commenter regarding the contrast, though) and don't mind the crop, it makes it more interesting in my eyes.
However, there is nothing in the picture that conveys the idea of table shot, even if it was done that way. The shot would have been exactly the same if you had used a tripod. I didn't vote nor take part in the challenge, but I would have missed that element as well.

This is an excellent example of dpchallenge voter blindness. I think this is a very, very nice shot that got hammered big time because people expected to see a table or part of one in the shot. The challenge was to shoot from a table top to get a different perspective, which you've done perfectly - this is not a usual angle for a portrait. I like the lighting, the pose, the expression. The shot loses absolutely nothing with the crop. Trust your gut - not dpchallenge voters. I could easily see this shot as part of an exhibition or in a gallery.

wow, didn't expect to get this low. the only crop was to take out the right side of photo. I thought this would be a community of integrity and people would trust that the camera was on a flat surface hence the top of the head missing, "not a normal view". I guess I broke too many "photography rules", so to speak, ...still learning some of those. I do appreciate the comments, they will help. ...next time.

A touch more contrast would have been nice, the image looks a bit flat.

This seems like an odd shot for the challenge. I will however assume that the camera was sitting on a table top to shoot it but I have a feeling it won't do well because of that.

Is he sitting at a table? I would like to see someting of a table in a table shot. The rest is really good

The immediate reaction is that this image is a little too tall - a crop of about 1/8th or even to a 1/4 of the image would have improved it's immediate impact. From a technical standpoint, it is an excellant capture which demonstrates good control of the zone system and the emotional effects of grayscale images. A little minor technical issue in that the pin point highlights are a bit of a distraction, it might have been a good idea to either reduce those by changing exposure or even bending the rules just a little and cloning them out - they are akin to hot pixels and could be viewed as such and still be within the rules. From an artistic standpoint, and this is an immediate reaction that this reviewer is stuck with and can't shake, the eyes are the mirror of the soul and there is a very slight hint of a smile in those eyes that is at odds with the mood the author very competantly set. This may not be a universal view though and is probably unigue to this reviewer. In any case, it is a brilliant image, competant and very effective in conveying both mood and emotion. Well done.

For me this is more of a portrait then a table top shot. Also I'm a bit bothered that the top of his head is cropped so tightly. Focus and tones are good.

find it hard to fit to the challenge, would like to have seen the table the camera was placed on in the composition...
