Challenge: Unusual Viewpoint (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 700
Location: Barrington Library, Barrington, Rhode Island
Date: May 22, 2004
ISO: 100
Galleries: Nature, Black and White
Date Uploaded: May 22, 2004

I was at the Barrington Library (in Rhode Island) scoping out possible shots. I looked up and noticed the spikey pods on this tree and decided they would look great in high contrast against the sky. The sky was overcast with no clouds so it was nearly white to begin with. I set my camera to extra contrast, at b&w, with an ISO rating of 100 and pointed straight up. I had very little adjustments to make to achieve the nearly pure black and white values. I cropped and upped the contrast a couple of levels.

I predict I'll get a lot of comments to the effect of 'it's too contrasty", 'the sky is blown out', 'overexposed'. I thought of calling it, "I meant to do that..."

I'm pleased with this photo because I planned for the effect at the time of making the shot and the results were just what I was looking for.

I'm sorry if you were offended by the grammar correction. I didn't really see your terse comment as helpful -- it just came of as rather offhanded and disinterested. That apathy triggered my sarcasm. I realize you weren't interested in the photo but if you were going to bother leaving a comment, a few words describing what wasn't interesting would have helped. Are you bored by trees in general? Or is just this particular tree? Is it the composition that is boring to you; or the stark black and white? Your comment left me with the impression that you were so bored by it you couldn't be bothered to explain why.

Or, to put it in English, you lack an interest in the image. The image doesn't have any feelings on the subject.

You know this works for me because of the tones. I think this would of been just another branch shot in color. Good shooting.
