A US Marine from 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment provides security while other Marines load onto a CH-53E in southern Afghanistan. I changed the crop from the version I have on my website to give a little more intimate view of the person. Original crop was a lot wider, showing more of the landscape. By far my favorite photo of the month because what was actually there is far less than I have seen anyone live with before. The infantry are living in shit holes for lack of a better word. 7 month deployments in these kind of living conditions on top of limited communication and frequent combat situations make life rough for these Marines and Sailors here in Afghanistan. Their dedication to their mission is essential to safety of all nations, not just the United States.

I am rather taken by this shot, BUT...
The way you cropped it, makes him walk out of the picture instead of into it. This way You have way too much wasted space to the left of him.
That said, I'm a fan of your whole Afghanistan serie.

great shot. Nice clarity on the ground and the soldier. I might lighten him up a bit with some dodging next time.

An incredible portrait that is crisp, sharp and properly framed and composed - a technical success in every way. From an artistic standpoint, it has significant impact being richly colored with excellant detail. This image would have worked as a black and white as well. A sound demonstration of the power of properly controlled light and focus to obtain an effect. Well done

FAR too much unneeded space, the subject gets lost.

Nice focus but he's rather lost. I might have cropped it so we can zoom on him more. :~)
