I like that almost all lines are diagonal. The real interest in this image, to me, is the upper right quadrant.

Had I run down several flights of stairs and set up my tripod on the railroad tracks, perhaps this image would be better. Then again perhaps everyone would have moved after noticing me - and while I stood there annoyed and dumbfounded - I would have been hit by a train. I decided to go with this image and the alternate explanation of details that follow:

The goal was to lead the viewer from the railroad crossing in the foreground to the white cross atop the barely discernible steeple in the distant background.

A double entendre.

I was tempted to submit an HDR version of this image but it looked too much like an HDR image.

This version, however, looks too much like a snapshot (though the "technicals" are good) unless one takes more than one second to look at it. After the second one second view, it looks like a snapshot still. But then give it another second. Notice the subtleties.

Finally, if after viewing this image and exhausting all possibilities, you still think this picture sucks, realize you are probably wrong.

I didn't even notice the cross of the church, it's so teeny. Maybe if you had tied up a hot blonde and put her on the tracks people would've paused longer to soak up the scene you've presented.
I'm glad you didn't go with HDR.

Might be easy to pass over this, because it's so unassuming. But it is a perfectly conceived and composed photograph. It's about the meaning of the crossing. I think about all the similar crossings in all the similar places, and what they have contributed to our lives. It's a very fine documentary photograph. 8.

Perhaps simply that it's so very ordinary, and yet so very well composed. That all routes through here lead one's eye back to that pale building.
