My friend hamming it up for the camera on the Masaya volcano crater rim. Little did he know, we would end up hiking the entire crater rim, including the area that you see in the background, and would end up actually climbing hand over hand like this for parts of it.

The hike was extremely precarious, but an unforgettable experience.

This reminds me very much of a trip to the Rio Grande Gorge in New Mexico a couple of years ago. I lost a small bag with 2 lenses in it down on the rock face, and had to climb the couple of hundred yards up and down a few times before I found it. I found it by looking back through the images in my camera, then following the original track by using the images as a guide. My monopod was a very useful tool for this kind of trekking, as it could be used as a third leg for stability while doing the moves from rock to rock, and to test for loose spots.
