The background of this shot is duckweed -- the world's smallest flowering plant. It is considered a good thing in this water treatment facility, because it removes nitrogen and phosphorous from the water, and provides food for the ducks and shelter for the frogs and young fish. The wading birds don't mind it, and since they can fish by sound, they don't need clear water to feed.

The algae provides a good foil for the heron - gives the image something of a Japanese print type feel.
