This is my attempt at showing the American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "silent". I had a lot of trouble getting the blur of my hands to show very well- tried all sorts of shirts, gloves (which looked fake) but nothing worked too well. Seems like the thing I needed to do was to make my hands brighter than the scene somehow- didn't have enough time to get creative enough. Suggestions are welcome! Still think this was a neat idea... hopefully that will snag some votes...

I loved this idea and thought it was a perfect concept for the silence challenge but as some others mentioned, it was the technicals that ended up hurting the photo. I too thought you could have pulled yourself away from the wall since the camera actually ended up focusing on it instead of you. One thing to think about trying is getting a desk lamp or some kind of spotlight and have it focus on the area of just your hands and mouth. Then turn off the lights and use maybe an ISO of 200. The idea would be to take the attention away from your face and bring more focus to your hands. Just a thought for you - good luck in the next challenge!

Oooh, I really like the concept here.

So many entries that show a person with a finger pressed to their lips. I know it's meant to imply "Quiet or Be silent" but the image does just not convey a feeling of "Silence" to me. Also you focused on the wall instead of the person as can be seen by the wall being in focus and the person out of focus. 4

I like how the hands are but I think this picture would be much more effective if he in total wasn't blurry, just his hands.

A good concept - but the resulting image doesn't quite work for me.

interesting idea, but I find the color cast and the shadow behind his head distracting. I think you'd lose the shadow, and bring your subject out more (the wall texture is a little distracting as well...) by bringing him out and away from the wall. Also, I'd recommend fixing the color cast in Photoshop (perhaps a cooling filter?)

good idea, but could be made better at the level compositional and general.

The idea is good, but just really badly executed.

The idea for this photo is really good, however the entire image is out of focus. I would have loved to see this, if possible, with the head sharp, and the hands slightly blurred showing movement. I feel that the shutter speed you used, based on the amount of motion blur from the hands, was too slow. Slight blur on the hands would have worked better, and things like the Teeshirt showing through the hands would then have been avoided, and a much better chance of getting the face sharp, and avoiding movement of the shoulders.
Also, the head is off centre. I don't think that works for this shot. Having the head centred and the crop off the shouolders the same of both sides would also have helped the image......
