Challenge: Sound II (Basic Editing)

Lens: Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC for Pentax Digital AF
Location: Dicky Beach, Sunshine Coast, Australia
Date: Jan 25, 2009
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/125
Galleries: Landscape, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Jan 25, 2009

A photo from my Dicky Beach shoot early Saturday morning. It kills me that I can't advanced edit this one because the part of the shipwreck is somewhat underexposed to covered in seaspray - something awry anyway. Additionally, the lens dust is somewhat of an issue. However, under the circumstances this is the best that I can manage given the standard processing rules.

POST: I would never have thought this would ribbon. :)

As most landscape photographers do, I got up at 3am, drove for 90 minutes, walked around in the dark for another 30, found the wreck and crossed my fingers the sky would light up with a beautiful dawn. It wasn't to be, instead it rained and I almost got dunked by a rogue wave. A beach patrol guy drove past and stopped to watch the circus for 15 minutes, I think he thought I was a little stupid in the surf and rain...Perhaps wondering if he was going to have to get out of his warm dry cab to drag me from the surf? I made the 90 minute drive home in wet sand infused clothing and told my wife the photo session had been a disaster - how wrong I was.

This will probably be my last landscape photo with my old Pentax *ist DL which has been a wonderful camera over the last 3 years. It seems such a fitting way to retire the old girl.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and the very generous votes. A BIG thank you to my photography buddy who helped me greatly with the processing. Oh and I promise not to enter another Open Challenge without removing sensor dust spots. ;)

I really like this photo. it truly brings me back to a time in my personal life, and for that it has special meaning. as a photo: i really like the fading line of poles and the waves. I really think the black and white do this photo justice too. congrats on not only a nice photo, but a nice pretty ribbon!

I think you made a fantastic job of this. The b&w ist perfect and I see none of the "imperfections" you see - all I see is real beauty. Congrats on your well deserved ribbon, Matt.

Didn't take you long to get back in the swing of things! Congrats! I love this in B&W, of course, and really like the light as it moves across the photo. Enjoy the new toys when you get them. :-)

"Additionally, the lens dust is somewhat of an issue." — Basic editing has allowed cloning of dust spots for over a year now.

Nice image! Congrats on ribbon!

Like an oil painting! at least in the sky, great black and white seascape, not sure editing would have improved this anymore, good as is...nice going.

terrific tonal range and composition. It conveys mood, movement and drama. Some will probably say its a shoehorn but I'd say it's one for the wall. Great stuff

Very fine seascape. Amazing tonal range, considering Basic. This says sound of the surf to me. My favorite in this challenge. 10

I don't know where to start, other than to say this is really nice. To me, it almost has a biblical look to it. All it's lacking is Moses standing on the shore, with a staff in the air. Excellent.
