The horsehead nebula in orion. Almost impossible to view directly because it's so faint, but easily captured with long exposure photography. This image was taken on Jan 24th with a 10" newtonian telescope. The first part of the image was 4 5 minute exposures taken with an IDAS LPS filter (light pollution filter). This generates a horribly undetailed image with no contast and virtually no fine detail because of the sky fog... however, the colors that are on the image are correct. The second part of the image is 6x12 min worth of hydrogen alpha filtered image. This gives a deep deep red image that is completely unaffected by light pollution. Take this image, stack it in photoshop, then mix it with the red channel of the color image and you get the above image.

All I can say is, "wow! tough crowd!". I really thought this would do much better, I think it's the best astrophoto I've ever taken. If anyone has any feedback for me as to why this didnt' do better, I welcome it with an open mind. For anyone that's interested, here are the processing steps involved in putting this image together after initially captured using the telescope: the making of the horsehead

I didn't vote in this challenge. I was just skimmimg the thumbs and this one jumped out at me. I think it is incredibly beautiful, and very well executed. Imho it's a wonderful image which has been way undervalued.

I guess 6.0 is pretty good, considering, but nevertheless in *my* pantheon this, and other images of its ilk, are not given enough credit. Beautiful work, and a 9 from me.

Just incredible. Almost no words to describe this. The color is good, the subject is interesting and there are lots of details. Very nice image. Going to faves!

The Horsehead Nebula is a wonderful sight to behold. Perhaps a tad more contrast could give this image a little more pop
