To me, nothing says "silence" like freshly fallen snow.
I had taken a shot very, very similar to this before challenge was announce, but wasn't very happy about it. I was shooting in the vein of a shot called "lonely" on 1x that we bantered about here. (So, all of ya'll that claimed it was genius better have given me a 10. hahahahahahahaha)
So, I reshot the next day.
Very little post. Fixed white balance, converted to bw. Reduced contrast (this made me twitch -- I really like high contrast in shots), resized. oh yea, noise reduction.
edited again with more contrast. i couldn't stand it. it is further away from my original concept (which is probably to "metaphorical" anyway), but now I can stand to look at it a bit more. :)
probably would have been better in the "gray" challenge, but there is that teeny tiny issue of dates. :P
est score -- 4.8
probable score -- 4.3
dream score -- 7.3 (hey, it says DREAM) |

cold and desolate feel to this. works well for the challenge, but not very much to look at really. |

This looks a little gray and dull on my screen... the highlights aren't quite white, and the mid-tones predominate. I would suggest doing an adjusment in levels, or perhaps adding a little more contrast. |

I feel the single stalk against the snow does very little to convey the feeling of "Silence" to me. Photograph is nicely exposed though and the whites show good tones. 5 |

With this kind of picture I'd suggest pulling in on your subject since there is a lot of bad negative space which eats up the picture.
Pull in on the snow on the plant and make it more of a focus. |

Very Zen if a bit uninteresting. |
