If the BG was full of branches, you did a very nice cleanup to make them disappear. The bird stands out now, with the backlighting. Nice that you were able to keep the detail this good on the shady side of the bird too.

I like the backlighting; it gives a nice glow to the tail feathers. You could try a little dodging on his face, chest and feet to make him stand out even more.

Love the backlight! Hard with backlight to make the bird pop. A helpful tool is a flash extender like the Better Beamer or the like. You can use fill flash set to -1 or 2 EV and get the bird to stand out better and light the eye. Sometimes I can even use my pop-up flash to get a little catch light but with a long lens its not always possible.

Sweet photo! I can't help but notice, everytime I look at one of these wonderfully clear photos, it's the character in their faces that catch my attention. This fellow almost has a comical glace..like he's got his eye on that little mouse way down yonder. (Hmmm maybe that's what he really is lookin' at!) :O)

this is a beautiful Red Tail Hawk, they are my favorite raptor. They are quite the adaptive birds able to live in large cities or the country. You captured it well, very watchful they are!
