The sharp-shinned hawk gets it's name from it's long, thin legs: the shins, appear to have a leading edge. These long legs aid the hawk in snatching its rather fast, elusive quarry. Although sharp-shins appear delicate they are actually remarkably strong, which decreases the victim's chances of escape once it has been grabbed..

This fellow dropped in one day recently in hopes of a snatch from the back yard..I didn't notice any feathers left behind..
