Hopefully slipping in under the wire for week 1 (since 2009 is a still in its first week). I did shoot it Jan 6.
I've been wanting to use this 4" snow globe for a challenge but haven't gotten one it will fit with.
Shot outside my front door with shrubbery as a backdrop. The bright light is the morning sun and the refractions are from my house and sidewalk. Shot at 200mm from about 2 feet or so.
Straighten and change to different WB in Camera Raw, then import to CS3.
Crop sides and resize to 720.

This would probably look better against a black backdrop with less reflections.

I think this is well done considering what you must be dealing with shooting through glass. It does look like it has a bit of yellowish cast, but maybe it's like that in real life.

Thanks for the comments. Constructive criticism would be especially welcome also. Yes, it's a snow globe, but I went to extra effort to ensure it wasn't shaken up so it would be as clear as possible for this picture. It looks like it was a little dusty after all. Now I'm wondering if I should have thought out shooting at home for a year. Of course there are 52 shots around home, but can I make them all interesting? We'll see.

I like your challenge theme - it will really open your eyes. This is a great start.

Shouldn't there be snow in a snow globe? Seems a difficult object to photograph (lots of reflections), but this looks very good. Great choice of the background.

Very clean shot for shooting a round glass object - I find it hard to deal with the reflections on those.

I like how the ball acts as a fisheye to pick up everything behind it.

Great idea with the snowglobe. I really like the green in the bg.

I like the distortion the globe causes on the shrubs.

You can play around a lot with pictures of a globe - look to the lightbulb challenge for inspiration. I like the greenery showing through.

Ooh. Neat. I love that we can see the shrubbery through the ball. Cool shot.

Nicely done. There's a lot of photo in this. You've got a fair bit to do to follow up 52 weeks all 'at home' (maybe our fearless leader will give you a couple of weeks free in the summer) but after this I'm thinking you'll do it.

The shrub in the backround creates a very neat effect.

I think the centered composition works great because of her pose peaking over her shoulder that way.
