I thought it was very unusual to come across a mother duck with 10-11 juveniles in tow; I'm guessing she got such a large number due to ducklings that were orphaned and then joined her little group...

it also suffers from jpg compression - much more impressive full size

I love the B&W of these - almost pencil-sketch but still decidedly photograph. Quite often, from what I've seen at the local pond, mothers will cooperate and share chick-raising detail. There may well be another mature female somewhere and half these ducklings are hers.
