Greetings Josh and * Greetings from the Critique Club *

Your second challenge - and a very nice submission. We won't discuss the "rules", "customs" or "manners" of the site, only the image itself.

"The Welder" is a very strong image - primarily due to the dramatic lighting. That lighting really makes the colors stand out and become critical to the composition. The yellow and balck rope would normally just "be there" - but in this image it is a great lead-in tool.

It generally works better if there is more space behind your subject than in front of it - so consider cropping the image on the right side so that the yellow-black rope is right on the border.

On the other side - cut a bit off the left and the bottom so the coiled rope is kinda in the bottom left corner.

This cropping will make it nearly a square format, but I think you'll find it works a bit better.

YOur colors are fantastic - with the green shirt, blue pants and helmet, and the red beam all leading to the action in the hands. And the entire scene is framed by a triangle of rope.

Good seeing - keep shooting and sharing!

Thanks to all who commented. I learned a lesson on posting to forums before a challenge, to be honest, i guess I wasnt thinking.
Thanks!

This should have placed much higher. The lighting, colors, mood, everything is excellent. I may have cropped it a bit different though. No doubt in my mind that this should have at least been in the top 20.

Sounds like you posted this in the forums, before you entered it. The fact that others saw it before, may have impacted your score a bit.

Adding to my favorites.

I love colours in this picture.

Maybe some crop down of it??

Didn't we get to see the photo in a forum recently? I like the concept and lighting. I think the bottom is a little distracting though. Perhaps you could try to darken it to take it out of focus or something so that our eyes aren't drawn to it (for future reference of course) :)

Nice colors, but lighting seems very unnatural.

Great colors, strong composition and interesting lighting - though there has to be a source other than the torch. One of the best in the challenge.

Didn't we already have a discussion about this photo on the forums? I see you went with the lighter version :)

This just needs a little lopped off the left side and the it'd be perfect. The sparks falling down are good so the bottom of the image is needed. Nice job! 7

I might have tried for a closer crop, or less dead space on the left.

Nice color and interesting lighting. I'd crop in a bit - maybe go with a vertical composition.

I've seen this in the forums and commented on it there. Does it belong in this Challenge? (After looking this up, I see you're new, SpOOf, and perhaps didn't know that we try to keep all challenge entries confidential and anonymous)

Nice photo. Saw this in the discussion forums though. FYI, it is not considered good form to reveal your entry in the week of voting or to seek opinions in advance of entering.

That said, a good piece of work. You've captured the lighting very well and the composition is excellent. Effective use of square format

Can you hear the sizzling of the welding rods? I can. I can feel the heat on my face and feel the need to turn my head from the brightness. One man weilding the fire of creation, framed within the framework. Hope I can feel as content in my work as this man appears...

Nice subject matter. good exposure. I would like to see it crisper, and maybe offset the suject to one side or the other.
