Not very original but another "standard" type image that I've never done ... used speedlight with the pencil on a white piece of paper ...

whoa, that macro lens can make stuff really big!! This isn't as close as I could get, it could fill the frame with just the exposed wood end!!

The flash was off the camera on the little stand it comes with with an infra-red remote trigger thingy.

Nice job on the lighting. And yeah, I do want the tip to be sharply focussed. It's part of the convention for these shots ;-)

What's the point?

Heh! Couldn't help myself. :-) I have a flash and that lens - I should see what fun stuff I can do with it. Do you have the flash on or off the camera?

Nicely composed. Image might have been better if the tip of the pencil wasn't OOF instead of where the lead meets the wood... but that's just my 2c.
