A good way to mitigate noise without losing detail (in advanced editing) is to duplicate the image into a new layer, use the 'reduce noise' filter so the background looks smooth in that layer, then just use the eraser on the noise reduced layer to let areas of detail come through clearly (experiment with opacity for best results- 100% for main focal plane objects and then down from there for smooth transitions). Hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice, and for the record, I am not an expert.
