This is a picture of some Iron filings sitting on a piece of steel with a magnet behind to make them stand up... I had several ideas, but it was a busy week... I have two jobs now... construction all day, and teaching evenings... so I had to go with the easiest one... This is an EXTREME closeup... I used two extension tubes (total of over two inches long) so the quality is only so-so... you can see in the setup pic below how small the iron filings really are... The setup pic is actually from one of my outtakes, but same idea... (I'll add the setup pic later...)
as this is a last minute entry, I am not expecting a very good score... meh.

well... here are the setup pics... the iron filings that you see in the second one are from an out take, the ones in the actual challenge entry pic are smaller...
oh... and about the DOF... this shot was taken at f/32 WITH a load of extension tubes... soooo yea... thats as deep of a DOF as I can go... i do like the result though...

First Impression: This photo fits into the challenge perfectly.
Composition: Great composition. I like the large grouping of iron on the right, but I really like how smaller fillings fill the frame. The smaller fillings really add depth to the photo. The lighting also really adds depth to the photo by giving the filings some great shadows. The colors of the rust are also perfectly used. Good focus.
Subject: I feel that the use if iron in this photo fits the challenge perfectly. I also really enjoy how you used the physical(magnetic) and chemical(rust/oxidation) properties of iron in your photo.
Creativity: I find this photo very creative because of the reasons in my subject portion.
Improvements: I am not sure if it is the texture of the iron filings or the use of USM, but edges of the filings almost seem too sharp and a little harsh. The filings are distracting to me. Softening up these edges a little bit would be a good improvement in my opinion.
My Thoughts: The composition and the subject are just awesome. I study Physics and the fact you used the magnetic properties of iron shows your creativity. I could easily see a photo like this being used in physics texts or lectures. I honestly feel that not many of the photographers who scored higher than you showed there subject in a manor that truly reflects their particular element on the periodic table. You on the other hand, nailed it!
Overall, great photo. I would score this a 9. If you have and questions please PM me. I hope my critique has been help and informative in some way.
What a cool idea. It reminds me of those magnet games for kids (where you make a face out of it or something). Who knew it would be great for photography too?
When i looked at the thumnail i though SHOEHORN, but that is really brilliant! I love how you have captured what looks like a perfect landscape, nice use of DOF
This has amazed me since I was a kid (which I never was, I didn't say that and you cant prove it, I'll never confess...) Ahem... great shot, it reminds me of the PC lens arial landscapes that look like models. Great title too.
I like how this capture meets the challenge. There are iron filing trees, but it doesn't stop there, there is also iron oxide grass (rust). So it is truly an iron forest. Good Work!
wow! very cool. i would have tried to get a it lower to get more of a landscape, but it still gets the foresty part across. good take on the challenge:)
