This is my second attempt to sports. I'll appreciate comments and tips ;)
(not as sharp as I wanted, big cropping on it, so that didn't help either)

Very nice composition but the crop has hurt you a bit on clarity as you mention. It's nice you have his face and expression in the shot. If you shot below 1/500 you could try a faster shutter speed which may increase the clarity but probably won't make much difference.

Matt's suggestion of panning is a good idea if you are going to be struggling for sharpness make it a feature of your shot ... though it is pretty hard to get right so I'd recommend shooting some stopped action shots as well to fall back on!

I love surfing shots and this one is no exception. MattO is giving some really good comments here so I'll just refer to his comments. We all wish we could have the loooong reach glass :)

I think you have two things going against you here, but you also did alot right!

Here is what you did right.........the angle and the moment are very good, the intensity of the surfer is right there, I can feel it. Good colors as well.

What is hurting you......reach, it generally takes 500-600mm to shoot surfing and not have to crop so much that you lose detail. I also think that either a faster shutter, or slower shutter would work better, I'm not sure if its the amount of cropping that makes this effect of not stopped, or if the SS was just a touch low. I'd also recommend slowing down the shutter speed, stopping down and panning a bit. Its tough to do and the angle you do it at is important, but has an awesome effect. Good start keep them coming.
