Challenge: Street Photography III (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
Location: Hawthorne District - Portland, Oregon
Date: Oct 24, 2008
Date Uploaded: Oct 24, 2008

A drab young lady spends a sunny fall afternoon on a break from her job.

This was a very slight bump up in saturation and zero sharpening. She was not a posed model for me - if you could have seen her annoyance at me taking her picture it was quite comical. I specifically did not want her looking at me because she was so thin and able to look planted as she is so striking.

Just surfing DPC, saw this image. I drive around Hawthorne all the time, this captures what Hawthorne is. When I saw the subject and the colors of the buildings, my thought was "that's just like _____ Hawthorne." And sure enuf. GREAT image...

PostLuminous Award Nominee!
exceptionally well done, and the slight bump in saturation makes this image sing

Erin, this was one of my favorites in this challenge, and I have to go on record as saying I disagree with bvy about the over-saturation part. It's the bold, retro colors that make this in my opinion. I'm glad it did so well. Congratulations on 13th place!

Reminds me of the costumes from one of the original "Star Trek" episodes.

Playing around with my browser size, if I crop from the top of the trees up out of the image, and from the right of the yellow border behind her to the right out of the image, I see a much stronger shot. There is less 'edge distraction' and I can focus more on the main subject. Her pose is engaging and I like the colors throughout in contrast to her monochromatic outfit. The textures of the bricks play off nicely against her fur vest. Nice capture. Try the re-crop to see if you agree.

The colors really make this stand out. And the good looking girl doesn't hurt.

The bright garish colors absolutely make this image. So glad you did not change it to black and white (like so many others have done).

She's impossibly slender - a lovely tall drink of water. I want to reach out and slap her for smoking, too - it'll rob her of her looks all too soon! I like her faraway look - and the color definitely works in this one, as per your title.

What I really loved about this picture is the marvelous colors and the contrast between the person and the building. There isn't a lot of connection here with the smoker, but still works as a nice color study. My only suggestion might be to crop a bit off the top (8x10 format) to remove the gray sky so it all about the colors. Still good stuff and highly rated.

Nice to see some beautiful colour after so much black and white. Very strong image, great composition. I think the oversharpnening? lets it down a bit.

This is great! It's so hard to find something more interesting than shoppers, tourists or homeless people out there on the street. This is a gold mine. She is such an interesting subject, and set against the bold colors. Verrry awesome!

I like how she is wearing neutral colors, making her stand out. I wish you could have moved the camera a little to the right to lose the bin and make more of that interesting looking reflection. Overall it's still a good picture, so far one of my faves.

I like the bright and contrasting colours of this photo, but it does look a little too posed, but it shows the differences in nature and our own colour schemes which i like.
