So it's not a Queen Bee, it's just a regular Bee but I get an entry :)

Yes it is a little bit of a shoehorn but read the challenge description:
Visit the child in you this week and submit a photograph that depicts a scene or character based on/taken from one of Grimm's Fairy Tales. The title of your entry should be the title of the tale it is based on.

Damn voters have me at 5.07 right now and that makes me angry, the shot's not a 6 but it's not a 5.07 either. And it does meet the challenge topic, read the above bold bits - grrrrr.

No, it's not a Queen Bee, it wasn't supposed to be - double grrrrr!

Post Challenge:
Well, what can I say but "triple grrrrr" - sometimes meeting the challenge matters, sometimes it doesn't - this was clearly a case when most voters didn't give two hoots about the fact the image met the description but concentrated on the fact that the image didn't match the title exactly. Any further comment would involve bad language so I'll stop now.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

I'm surprised by the low vote on this one. I think it's a great macro shot, and I can see how it fits the challenge. However, I can also see how voters may not find it to fit the challenge as well as some other entries.

Some suggestions for improvement.. A lot of the entries in this challenge had a lot to look at. The frames were very interesting, and I think they held the viewer's attention. Your shot was well executed, and captured a bee in its natural environment, but after a few moments, there's not much left to look at. I agree with boyd2000 that expanding the DOF may have helped. I would have liked to see the detail of the far wing. But even with that, the background is not very interesting.

If this were a macro challenge, I would have expected your score to be much higher. However with a challenge like Brother's Grimm, I think the viewer goes into voting with the expectation of fairy tales, wonder, color and intrigue. Interesting that the top 13 shots focused on a human subject.

It's a good shot. Don't get discouraged. I'm sure you know voter perception is hit or miss. You have an awesome portfolio. Looks like you re-tried your bee shot for the Work challenge, and you got top 10! Nice job.

a nice macro - it doesn't actually look like a queen though

Nice detail on the bee. I like the few stripes of white in the background, looks better than if it'd been all the one colour of green, it breaks it up a bit having different shades. Like the crop on the flower too.

The DOF is a bit too limited with barely anything in focus. I think it would be better to stop down the lens some if you could still stop the motion.

Excellent close up, maybe a house in the background to fit the theme better,

Queen bees don't leave their hive and sit on flowers.
