I know that you can't always be at the scene when the light is right, however, I feel that this would look better at the opposite time of day, when the sun is behind you for the shot. If this was an evening shot, a short time later, and the sky would even out, as well as possibly allowing you to get more detail in the rocks in the foreground.
Another option would be to shoot from a different angle, but that would mess up the composition, so you did what you could.
The 5D is an outstanding camera. Keep shooting and posting. You have a good attitude, and you see the picture that you want.
If you post the shooting info with the images, it will sometimes help with commenting to know the ISO, aperture and shutter speed for the shot.
