This is a normal mosquito (probably 'Culex Territans') as seen through my macro lens. It's not nearly a 1:1 crop; on 1:1 you can even see the facets of his (or her?) eyes!

I was waiting for a friend of mine to check her email, when I spotted this mosquito sitting on the wall.

Used a single (remotely triggered) SB-600 flash as light source, and F32 (for maximum DOF). Only afterwards did I decide that the DOF is still shallow enough for a submission in this challenge!

Processing: Slight gamma, rotate (the wall was vertical), contrast, crop, resize, sharpen, added frame.

Holy under-rated photo batman! Perhaps the voters were looking for more obvious depth of field (although I would consider ANY macro shallow DOF). Still, congratulations on a fantastic photo with great lighting, composition, and sharpness. Hope to see more of these in the future.

as disgusting of an insect, its a really great photo.
you know how to please the eye by using the rule of thirds and lighting techniques.

I could be wrong here but because it's a shallow DOF I would guess that only portions of this little critter should be in focus. Even though it's macro about 40% of this frame is in focus. Just my thoughts. Hope it helps.

Shows more macro than depth of field. Good shot though.

Great macro and impressive how much of the bloodsucker is sharp! Not sure I want to know what this background actually is, but at least you didn't give us a 'sucker on someone's skin' shot. The high contrast with the background makes this particularly striking.

I don't think I have ever seen such a detailed photo of a mosquito. It's very interesting.

Great shot. Doesn't look like it will get much blood there.
