This hornet had the pleasure of being nuked by me, along with his 20 buddies. We had two nests about 3 feet apart. A few fell, so after a few days I decided to shoot a few of them in the adjacent flower bed. I tried for a few weeks to get a shot of them while alive, but I couldn't go through with it.

I really like the way that you've focussed the attention on the eye.

I think it's a good shot, but not a good subject for shallow DOF because of the nature of this shot you were always going to be minimising your impact, the fact that the flower has become your main element is I believe the reason you scored quite low.

Still an interesting shot though and it certainly looks like he is about to jump out from his hiding place :)

That score does seem a bit low.

I think it would have been better to have more of his face (head) in focus. As it is you have one eye and part of the antennas. I think that is a waste of your focus plane, which is already limited by shooting in macro.

Perhaps you were trying to show the hornet as hiding before it attacks, but the huge flower at the bottom half of the picture is unnecessary. If you can get a closer crop, I would crop more of the flower.

I don't have much success with macros myself, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Could the colours have been any more smashing? :) My word, some folk have all the photo opp luck.

Eeek, that's a bit frightening. Nice colors, DOF and interesting subject.
