 The colors were actually created from a black and white image- without selections or layer masks. To do this, I first did a "levels" layer to get the brightness/ contrast the way I wanted.
Then I opened a "selective color" layer. It allows you to fine tune the colors of different light tones in the image. I started with the "Black" color option and using the three color corection sliders, changed it to a nice shade of blue. Next, I moved on to the "Neutral" channel. Here I tried to get more towards a red or yellow color- came out more towards the yellow in this case. Then I repeated the process with the "White" channel.
After I had brought out some color, I used a "Hue/ Saturation" layer and even another "Selective Color" layer to get the final result.

I did a little dodge and burn for some vignetting and cleaned up all the little spots before resizing (using "Bilinear" instead of one of the more common "Bicubic" resize methods- I like it better since it allows me to decide how much sharpening to add- but whatever works best for you here) and some smart sharpening.

This is quite a cool study in texture and light/shadow. I appreciate your notes - had not thought to bring color out of a b&w image before, I'll have to try that.

I like this color version! the shadows add a lot to this image. simple and interesting at the same time!

Great shadow in this shot and I really think the color choice make this stand out to the eye with the yellow on blue. Nicely done!
