Challenge: Where You Live (Advanced Editing I)
Collection: 2004 Challenges
Camera: Sony DSC-F828
Location: Bourne, Ma.
Date: Apr 22, 2004
Aperture: F5
ISO: 64
Shutter: 1/250 sec.
Galleries: Architecture, Rural
Date Uploaded: Apr 22, 2004

I only cropped two spots out that I have no idea where they came from. Dull gray spots that looked like something on the lens being barely focused but they moved with each picture I took. In camera spots I would think would stay stationary.
And today I went to the same spot and took more pictures and no spots. Same ISO, same aperture, and same shutter speed. I also used the same program in my camera.
I also cropped sharpened and resized.

A very impressive piece of engineering. Well taken.

I can see where this landmark would the be subject for this challenge. For me, though, I think it would be worth the time invested to crop and clone this a little differently. The heavy shadow in the foreground is both distracting and sad because the grass does help to provide a context for the structures. I think that if you could get the shot without the shadow then I'd leave the grass but in this version I think I'd crop the photo so that this shadow was not visible. Also, the powerlines running parallel to the ground and from the bottom of the bridge up to the top edges are distracting against the lovely, noiseless sky. IMO this photo is a candidate for the Advanced Editing rules in that removing these powerlines wouldn't take away from the integrity but would keep a very small element from being distracting all the way across the photo. Finally there is a sign at the bottom of the bridge and that sign is bright white, probably from reflected sunlight. I think that could be darkened a little to keep it from distracting the viewer as their view travels up, down and across the bridge. I like the subject and the angle provides the viewer with a path to follow visually. You've managed to capture something that looks active (what with all the girders and beams) against a smoothly graded, calm background.

This is clearly a good shot and a well composed one, wish you caught it with a more interesting sky.

A nice, sharp image of an interesting subject. I like the cast of the evening (I assume) sun on the structure, too. I have to be honest in saying that I can't quite figure out what the point of this structure is. In other words, how do train cars get lifted up by this thing, and WHY? I'm sure there's a good reason!
