 The "heroin" is flour stuffed into small ziploc bags. Shot with one 400w strobe off to the rear left behind the scene.

I’m sure this will get hammered by the voters that disagree with the subject matter or feel that it is immoral. I don’t really care. I take photos and submit them based on the ideas / set-ups I like, not on what I think the voters will drool over. If this gets at least one 8, 9, or 10; then the image has impacted someone else and has made its statement.

Post Challenge: I wasn’t going for "shocking." My intention here was to simply show a “slice of life,” albeit a darker & unseen slice of life for most people. I work in a field where I see the effects of substance abuse frequently. There are a ton of people in the U.S. and across the world that are addicted to drugs. A surprising number of which are adolescents and young adults from middle class & upper middle class families. Waking up and shooting heroin or snorting a line of coke is as normal to them, as waking up and brushing your teeth is to you. A darker slice of life viewed through the looking glass. It is what it is, nothing more, nothing less.

The thing here is, someone tried a shocking drug image a while back, but they pulled it off with aplomb, it caused some controvery on the site, but personally I thought it was a great shot.. this one however is very poorly executed. It just doesn't work on a shock level or an artistic level..

B&W would have given this more of a photojournalistic feel.

I just imagined like some horrible parent discovering her daughter's crack collection: "Now you are going to sit here and inject ALL of that heroin until you've learned your lesson!"

The image is a bit too well-lit and saturated for such a serious subject. It looks like she's just sitting down to her breakfast cereal. Not to say she doesn't do this every morning, but "mundane" isn't the feeling one should get from this.
And, as I hinted at earlier, that IS a awful lot of drugs, just sitting in front of her as if she's going to work her way through the box.
