I remembered a photo done a few years ago by deviantART artist Mary AKA Devilicious in which she took on the conceptual idea of how abusive words can hurt by effectively using a cardboard box. Her work can be seen here -sticksandstones-.

Well I did NOT want to copy her idea/work so I wondered if there was a way to do something similar but with a inspirational or 'feel good' theme to it. Then it hit me. The inspiration came from looking at my youngest music box in her room and I instantly thought of the jingle of the ol'Coke a Cola commercial. The one that goes "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony".

Pre-Production

I had to model my stencils from something so I searched out the web and modeled them after images I saw on the internet (the idea of placeing a treble clef inside the guitar is one of my very own ideas). I then made 'temp' plate stencils, placed them on Glitter cardstock paper and then cut them out. Cutting out the notes and the continents were the hardest part (thank you scrapbooking scissors as they were wonderful on the tight corners!). The piano keys were from the white glitter cardstock. I measured and then drew in the black keys and the lines with a black sharpie.

Then got a box, used the glue gun and stuck them on the sides of the box. The whole process took about a day and a half from start to finish.

First photo shoot & reshoot

The first photo shoot showed me some problems. Namely that the seam at the back of the box showed up because I folded it on the horizontal. Then there was lighting of course:-) The re-shoot had the seam placed on the vertical so it is hidden my model's body. One way I improved the lighting within the shot was by having the model sit more to the front edge of the box rather than further in the back like it was in the first shoot. The re-shoot had the t-shirt pulled down more so the heart pattern was more visible instead of scrunched up. Another detail in the re-shoot was to 'plug' in the headphones into the side of the box so it would take on more of the characteristic of being a music box.

An apt answer to the challenge. Nice and sharp. Good DOF. Nice expression on the model's face - does not look staged.
