Wanted to create a dramatically side-lit self-portrait with smooth transitions to pure black. Experimented with various back and rim lights to get more separation against the background...this was one of the first shots I took and ultimately the one I liked best.

Lit with one close-in Canon 580EXII triggered with PocketWizard, using a grid spot made from drinking straws and cardboard. No special background used, it just fades to black through light falloff.

Converted to B&W with grayscale mixer in Lightroom, adjusted contrast and sharpened strongly to bring out a little grittiness. A very slight amount of yellow added with split-toning to warm it up.

this is a lovely image, but i'm afraid it's not really a high contrast image. high contrast has a limited tonal range of high and low tones, with very few intermediate tones. the ultimate high contrast is pure black and white, no greys. the more greys or intermediate tones, the less high contrast it is.

Nice one, but the shred of light on that upper lip lends it a look of a vampire :)
