... she carefully examined herself, and she remembered how perfect her skin once was; she remembered the sparkle of her eyes, and the softness of her hair. “No one was more beautiful”, she said, smiling. “They used to call me Machita, because I was the only one of my sisters who had blonde hair and fair skin”. But then the sadness returned to her eyes. “How fast time goes by”.

Without warning, the young girl hugged her, as if to let her grandmother know that every tear that had ever fallen from her eyes, every strand of gray hair and every line on her still perfect skin were embedded in her heart. “Machita” smiled as she felt the warm embrace, and at that moment realized she wouldn’t want to go back for anything in the world.



This is a picture of my grandmother, who I love dearly. "Machita" is a term of endearment used in Costa Rica for people who are blonde.

This is am amazing story and something that resonates very closely with the way I feel when I look at a mirror, and my life, and how my grandaughters look at me.
