Well for the second time this week I managed to get the picture I had in my mind when I thought about the challenge

The calf in the photo is mine, I used my new tripod and my macro lens to try and get fairly close up to show both the muscle and beginnings of what could be varicose veins that comes after 45 years of rubgy, running and cycling, its kinda cool and gross at the same time

I really like this shot and whilst I appreciate that its not going to ribbon I have to say I will be muy disappointed if it does not score well above my average (Given this I expect it to do really badly!)

I'm sorry to see that you are disappointed with how this turned out. I think at this site, if you want to get the high scores, then you would need to incorporate this subject into a story more. Look at this photo without the title and what does it tell you? I see a leg amongst objects. If you want to engage the viewer more, why not also show a little more of the bike? I am thinking more of a profile view, where we see the foot on the pedal and also the calf. This puts "action" in the viewers mind and i guess you get to see the muscle at work. Not sure if this makes any sense. Just my thoughts here.

Well, it should have indeed scored better than 5.1 in my opinion. You can so tell that is the calf of a very athletic person. . .kudos to you for staying in such great shape. I think the photo is very good!!! The detail is amazing.

That is one clear shot Jon. You've got quite a large calf muscle... and vein. You are right it is kind of cool. I think gross is a bit harsh but there does seem to be something but I am not sure what. It's not the vein, maybe you just some more sun... and a shave.

I think that here might be an alien or a parasite of some sort at work here. I am not sure, however I believe that those lumps are really mean little buggers that might try to kill you when you are sleeping.

Nice and sharp but the subject matter is a tad boring.

Excellent concept shot. I like the fact that you have connected the shot to the bike and used shallow DOF to focus our attention on the driving force. The exposure is pretty solid, but the lighting seems a bit flat.

One area where I would adjust the shot is the crop. I think the square crop really hurts you here. A portrait orientation could elongate our focus more on the leg. Also, I am not sure about the perspective - more of an angle shot (using a tripod and a timer to get the shot) may have actually given this a more flattering view of the muscles in the leg. That is a serious calf, but it could further be exemplified with a side view.
