The color version of this started off as a potential entry for the color on color challenge, but I went with tomatoes for color on color and therefore converted the lettuce into B&W.

I thought kale was a type of lettuce at the time I posted this, hence I titled this lettuce, but it turns out kale is actually in the cabbage family. So I guess this actually should have been titled kale rather than lettuce. My bad. pawdrix tells me that what gave it away is that kale has a thick stem. So thanks to dpc I now know more about kale than I ever wanted to know.

This is wonderful in black and white! The contrast is beautiful and the detail AMAZING! It almost looks like an infrared photo. I can't imagine liking the color version better!

Very "crisp" lettuce. Wonderful texture and contrast captured here.

Very cool choice for b&w as it really focuses your attetnion on details often overlooked when in color. The viens in all the leafs are so detailed and this is well lit, very nice!

As in a lot of cases, conversion to B&W really highlights elements that I think are often lost in color - in this case, the very fine veins in the lettuce. It creates a different texture map than the color version probably provides.

Can't say that lettuce leaf would have been something I took a picture of. You have really done a good job converting this to B&W, would love to see the colour version.

Way to take a mundane object and make it interesting. The detail and contrast is phenomenal. Wow.

the lighting to highlight the veins and edges of the leaves works really well here - especially in b/w and the choice of composition with the angle adds a lot of interest to the shot

Nice shot though not too inspired. Lettuce doesn't move me much. ;)

eta:It could have been inspired. What do I know?

Ok, so no way would I have considered lettuce for a B&W and it's EXCELLENT - I love the frilly-ness of it. Almost looks like something to be found under the sea.

that is some WOW! detail on the lettuce. The lighting makes the veins jump out and the dark background really highlights the subject. Great job.
