Trivet, hot pad, whatever. This was another trivet, or hot bad, that I was playing around with for the macro challenge, with the patterns challenge in the back of my mind.

I'm not entering these, or anything close to what I'm posting here, in that challenge. Just that I've had patterns on my mind this week when looking for subjects to shoot for this side challenge.

Camera mounted on a tripod to try to get sharp as far back as I could shooting across the trivet, which is about 5" square full size.

ETA: For those who suggested a focus further back, I actually have several shots where I focused on the beads further back, but doing that throws the front beads OOF which, even slightly, is too distracting to the image. You can see on this image that, even at f/32, you really only get three rows of beads tack sharp, and another three acceptably sharp -- i.e., edges sharp, but losing some of the internal air bubbles in the glass. Puttng the "acceptably sharp" ones up front doesn't work, because those beads are the natural focal point for the image and need to be the most sharp.

In fact, you can see how the very first row of half-beads at the very bottom of this image are a little soft on the focus, as compared with the row immediately behind it. Guess I need to ask Ansel to borrow his f/64 lens. ;>P

Great colours.Great dof but I would have focused a little more toward the middle for even more sharper beads.

Right from the thumbnail, I knew I would love this. For the colors, the pattern, the mystery of the subject - it wasn't until I read the last line (fil enumber) that I understood this is used to retrieve hot pans from the stove. Excellent subject with a lot more possibilities to explore I'm sure.

Great idea. Love the colors. I agree that if you focused more towards the middle more would have been in focus. Especially at f32.

Love the colors. I think you lost DOF by focusing up front: had you focused in the middle you likely would have gotten more. Cool pic though!
