Here you see a boy who is an inpatient at Phoenix Children's Hospital. He has cancer. His mom (in the background) does not speak English. The boy barely does.

The organization I consult to is conducting an art program at the hospital. On the right, you see the teaching artist, Tom.

I've been there a few times to take photos and it is amazing how creating art has a healing and positive effect on the kids and also the parents.

Some of the kids participating in our projects die. The parents are always very gratified to have their kids' art that helps them keep their children alive in their memories.

I wanted to use this photo for the Illustrated Word side, but had a really hard time finding a poem or any words to go with it. But I found this Winnie the Pooh quote, which I found fitting.

Very moving, Alicia, thanks for sharing his story with us! And I agree with Judy, this should be hanging in the hospital, it is quite wonderful!

edit: if I had one tiny nitpik, it would be to slightly drop the text at the bottom, it is melding a bit with the bowl.

You found the perfect words to accompany your moving image, Alicia. There is so much wisdom in those Pooh stories. They really need to be read again as an adult to appreciate them fully. I agree with Judy about offering a print of this to the hospital, and perhaps doing more like it.

You should give this to the hospital in large format to hang on the wall. This is truly an inspirational shot - and the text could not be more fitting. How wonderful. I love the story.

Art and creativity truly are healing - I wish everyone could see what impact it has on the world.
