Challenge: Environmental Portrait II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D2H

Date: Mar 17, 2008
Aperture: 4
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/8

on a whim I asked the cabby if i could take some shots of the 'road', he didn't know that my 10-20mm took in such a wide view...

I took about 40 shots propping my camera on the little slot window, half were blurry b/c i was shooting at 1/8 or so, and this was the only one where the driver showed his face. Others had better visuals outside on the street, but I had to pick this one b/c of his face.

PP:

convert to greyscale, duotone'd with a light blue hue, lots of curves/levels work to get the contrast how I wanted it, Neat Image, USM, crop, border, S4W

Thanks for all the comments! I definitely didn't think this would score anywhere near where it did

Phenomenal, really cool tones, very nice capture of the cab driver in his environment, the dark tones add to this, very nicely done.

Very well done capture. Reminds me a lot of the movie, Collateral, with Tom Cruise and Jammie Fox as the cabbie.

Nice one AP. I was looking through your portfolio. Didn't realize you were in Brooklyn near the Heights. You have some nice shots, this one included...

This picture has such a nice "feel" to it. The busy blurr outside is a great contrast to the calm serenity inside the taxi. The blue, grainy texture works well with the night setting as it fades to black near the edges giving the picture a slightly mysterious look. Well done.

Very nice!!!! Great perspective and a strong black and white conversions (optikverve dramatic?). Really glad that you got the meter in the shot. Excellent sharpness for a night shot

Good job

This is an awesome shot. The bluish tones and the various lights make for a dramatic scene. It is definitely taken from a different perspective, as this is how you would view the driver if you were in the back seat of a cab. My only problem is that it is hard to see his face and what you can see is blurry. In another challenge I would probably mark this higher, but being a portrait challenge I think the face is one of the most important things...5

i would have never thought of this idea. you have included all the elements of subjects environment and post-processing suits very well. i know, it probably wouldnt be possible but just a little more light on subject's face would have made it a 9 or 10 for me. still 7

Definitely unique in this challenge. Portrait is weak, but the environment is probably the strongest in this challenge that I've seen thus far. Curious to see how this one does.

Very cool shot. How did you get it so sharp in such low light? I wish the driver was looking at the camera so we could get the emotion in his face. That's the only part that's missing for me.

Oh man that is a great shot, I just don't know how well it fits with the contest. I can hardly tell there is someone in the frame.
