I used to live and work not far from this plant. You have done a great job making this look pretty ominous. Personally, I like the darkness, to convey the threatening and poluted nature of the sky.

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone. I am really happy to be in the top 10! Unfortunately for those of you who thought it was a conversion...sorry...it's the real deal: black and white with a polarizing filter. I just nudged the contrast up a couple notches afterwards.

I also thought it was pretty interesting/ironic/sad to see an oil refinery sitting right on a California beach with all the wildlife around...

Congrats on the top ten finish but it should have been a ribbon winner here.

This shot has good potential, given the nice composition and the birds juxtaposed with the industrial equipment, but the B/W conversion is too dark.

I like how you've combined the beach and factory in the composition.. Gives the image an interesting twist..

Lovely b/w image, the B/W conversion on this is really good and the composition works really well.

I love the contrast between the environment and the man-made pollution making structure.

Wow this looks like it's on the moon or a scene from a science fiction movie.Great B&W image.

I see potential for pollution, but perhaps it is cleanly run and managed? Can't tell from the photo.

Great idea putting the pic in black and white-has great value and constates with good lines from the tire tracks which help to create movement.

This is an awesome photo. Must have been pretty tough to get. The perspective is really nice and the choice of black and white was a good one. Amazing job

Shoot for the highlights and let the shadows fall where they may. That was our motto back in the day. But then we also did a fair amount of dodging and burning in the old darkroom. I see the title but I don't see the pollution.

This is GOOD! Poignant with all the little birds hanging unsuspecting around the toxic plant. I love the composition, and the black and white contrasts are really nice.
