Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth, and food
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.
While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.
He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh Cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come forlorn and thin
Well...don't just stand there...Come on in!
by Francis Witham
And for those who don't already know, this poem is TRUE! Since moving to my rural home almost two years ago I have taken in a multitude of stray cats. I've taken four-litters-worth of kittens and one of the breeding moms in to be fixed and innoculated (17 in total, cost a frickin' fortune even with the generous discount the vet gave me). The kittens all started out feral; I've managed to tame them all except one, who unfortunately is a female and breeding and I can't catch the little bugger. Last time I tried she bit me through heavy leather gloves. I've got to figure something out soon, however, because she is with child again. Sigh. The kitten in this picture is one from her last litter. She and her sister are about five months old I figure, so I've got to finish taming them up so I can catch them and get them fixed. So the count is about 18 right now, plus my two indoor cats that I've had for ten years. Am I crazy? You bet! But the cat overpopulation is just terrible around here, and I couldn't bear to ignore them...I just feel I have to do my part to be part of the solution :-) |

I've said it before, I'll say it again - you do the BEST cat pictures. You really need to publish a book of them. |

This photo is so poignant and incredibly well processed. The poem is the bomb! Thanks for sharing it.
I don't now if you're feeding the feral cat you're talking about. If you are, just feed her every other day so she goes hungry. Then rent or buy - or maybe you have one - a cat trap, get a can of mackerel at the store and set the trap with the mackerel. That fish stinks to high heaven, and if she's hungry, she'll go for it. I've been trying to capture a feral kitty who is missing an eye and in need of medical attention. Animal rescue and several shelters gave me some good tips on how to capture a feral cat. Good luck. |
