Sandpaper. Apparently my reversed-lens setup is sharp in the middle but soft on the sides.

I think the blur toward the edges adds some interest to the picture - if it were all in focus I think the picture would be boring.

The lens is a "curved field" lens. Lenses for copy work, and some like the Micro Nikkors are "flat field" in their focus, which is great for copy work and shooting in the small stuff world. Take a look thru your setup at the inside of a bowl, and you may see focus all over when up this close.
This image has an almost fisheye look because of the way the edges are stretched. The grains of sand are a good macro subject.

I am looking for the sharpness in the center but my eyes is failing me. I do however see the sharpness fall off at the edges. Everything has limits and you've found some for your lens setup.

Yes indeed it is. I think they all are. The glass wasn't made for that purpose so it's not unusual to see blur around the edges. Good way to check for this.
