This is a ceramic ball and wick end. It fits into a ceramic piece that holds oil.
For some reason this shot keeps me thinking of 'Wilson' in Castaway. Perhaps I should make a face on it.

Seems the consensus is that the wick needs to be sharper. It looks smooth only because it has semi melted together from use.

Yes, this is a difficult shot. Aside from the wick being melted together, it is black on black in a frame of mostly light to mid tones. Just thinking aloud, I wonder if less overall light aong with a spot light on just the wick (even from a penlight or small focusing flashlight) might have given the wick enough boost to allow more detail to come through. Or you could just light the wick :)

I thought it was Wilson and that he had washed that smirk off his face. I too would like to see Wilson's hair in better focus. Nice idea.

Feels oof. Perhaps camera shake? Ton of potential to the surface texture and the wick. A backlighting on this would be awesome.

Cool shot. I would have tried to get the wick in a little better focus as opposed to the ball, since the wick tends to hold you attention more.
