Wanted to answer the question on the selective desat. The reason I kept it for the people is that I wanted to emphasize how content they were. To me, the fact that they were in color, illustrated that their world was smiling because of each other -- no matter how desolate their surroundings.

Like the overall lighting. The selective color doesn't really work for me in this photo. When I first looked at this photo I didn't notice that the surroundings were B/W. I knew something didn't feel right but it took a while to realize that the B/W background was what was bothering me.
