HDR from an early morning trip to Wicken Fen. This is a wind pump, the only working wooden windpump remaining in the Fens that were used to drain it and make it habitable.

Usual HDR faff at +/- 2 stops in Photomatix and then much levels, dodge/burn, USM then save for web. First time I've played with HDR and results not too bad although needs work. Horizon line is pretty naff and some odd distortions at 17mm on this lens seem to be apparent.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

The composition is really nice. It is framed well but could use a little tweaking with the crop. Following the rule of thirds (which can be broken--I know), I would scoot the windmill over to the left, and allow a tad more room at the top. These are minor issues comparatively.

Focus and DOF are good.

The biggest problem with this photo is the exposure. Most users, as I have found it, like to see nice even histograms with vivid color. The contents in this photo seems to be good candidates for these elements. I know the environment (setting of sun, or rising; I can't tell) may not be easy to accomplish this and fight the underexposure.

Also, the streak right next to the windmill blade is a little distracting as it seems out of place.

The big picture: I think you were on the right track with this photo, but with the challenging environment yielding some technical errors this photo performed mediocre in the challenge.

Keep up the good work though, do not get discouraged. Keep shooting!
