Challenge: Black and White in Color II (Advanced Editing VII*)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Nikon D80
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR
Location: California Hwy 58 Between Bakersfield & Tehachapi
Date: Feb 23, 2008
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/250
Galleries: Nature, Animals
Date Uploaded: Feb 24, 2008

Used 3 duplicate layers in Overlay, Saturation, and Screen modes at various fill values. Resized, sharpened, and added the border.

I hung out at the side of the freeway for about 45 minutes, waiting for the sun to poke through the clouds before getting this shot. My subjects are in the shade. Oh well, at least they're black. If you look closely, one of them is smiling!

Highway robbery!! ONLY THE SUBJECT is required to be B&W or GRAY SCALE!! This DOES meet the challenge, bit the argument that the cows are not quite the subject is valid.

Ok, not sure what to say here.....black and white in color???? Not sure that the concept is at work here??? Absolutely LOVELY shot, but I think it's meant to look like a Black and White shot, without shooting in black and white or desaturating. This is like a full color shot.

I'm sure you're already hearing this. Just thinking of it as I'm typing the words in. Sorry!

Lovely scene and well done. I do feel that this streches the theme of the challenge. I see the cows, which I assume are the black and white for the photo, but they are small and hardley noticable it seems to be a shoehorn for the challenge, imo.

i'm confused???

How is a full-color shot of some distant cows taking a picture of a black and white subject? Putting a title on it doesn't make the cows the subject.
03/03/2008 11:22:28 PM
beautiful landscape, and I do you your black subjects. It would have been really cool to have had a cow up front.

really nice pic, but, sorry, where is black or white?
In free-study it might do well
03/03/2008 02:33:45 AM
Great photo although I don't think it fits the challenge.
03/02/2008 12:24:39 PM
Umm....the challenge was to find something that you shoot in color mode and it comes out black and white. Sorry, this is a gorgeous landscape and beautiful colors, but it does not meet the challenge.

Awesome photo - absolutely love it, but I am not seeing B/W in Color... am I missing something?
03/01/2008 12:45:08 PM
You probably meant the cows to be your subject but they are too small to be of any significance in the image. In that regard this image would be a big stretch to meet the challenge.

Beautiful photo but not black and white. O.K. maybe the cows...and the shadows...and the clouds are indeed white but the sky is definitely blue! And the hills...they look green to me. There is some tan in there too. I am afraid this does not even come close to black and white for me. But I still love the photo.

Is this a wrong submission, pretty much the opposite of Black and White
02/29/2008 08:40:03 AM
I dont see how this picture fall within the challenge guidelines
02/29/2008 07:38:19 AM
Very nice photo, but a bit off challenge topic?
02/29/2008 06:07:39 AM
looking for the brown here? read the challenge discription(I stand corrected, you did read the description right and I did not)

That being said, the subject of this photo is not something that is black, white or greyscale which means it still does not meet the criteria of the challenge. The subject of this, according to your title, is a action which is not clearly depicted by your submission. However, if the cows had been the focus of your photo and I had read the challenge correctly I would have score this higher. Your photo is a good landscape and I do like the colors but I think it would have done better in a different challenge.

this does not fit into black and white in colour at all!
02/28/2008 04:29:47 PM
Beautiful shot, but not in the vein of the challenge, sorry.
02/28/2008 04:28:24 PM
I don't think that you have made the black and white subjects a large enough element within the image, but it's a nice photo otherwise.

Lovely photo but... black and white???
02/28/2008 10:00:53 AM
How is this black and white, all I see is green and blue.
02/28/2008 08:01:35 AM
Other then the cows, and road no B&W/greyscale. To me the landscape is the subject, and that is not a B&W or greyscale. The cows are way too far away, and just specks in the photo. I like where you going with the shot, but the cows just aren't the subject.

...dnmc = 1, but I'm certain you already know that. Otherwise a 10 for a beautiful image, excellent play of light and shadow and use of DOF/POV.

IMO: Too much color for the B/W spirit of this challenge. Subject (monochromatic cows) does not consist of a large enough portion of the image to be considered the actual subject despite the title. Qualifies for an OOBIE tho.

Beautiful, but DNMC I think? Lovely anyway! Montana, N Dakota, maybe Alberta?

Oh my this is anything but black and white! Maybe you misunderstood the challenge..so sorry because this is such a pretty scene!
02/27/2008 08:57:02 PM
beautiful shot, gorgeous lighting. Are you interpreting light and shadow as black and white?
02/27/2008 05:46:41 PM
Doesnt really fit the challenge.
02/27/2008 12:48:20 PM
I'm guessing the cows were the "black and white" subject but they are so small that the hills become the subject and they are not green. Pretty pic though, but I don't think it meets the challenge.

I'm not really seeing the black and white in this shot, sorry ... nice shot other than that though!
02/27/2008 12:41:05 AM
ummm lovely photo, beautiful rolling hills. possibly for the wrong challenge though?
02/27/2008 12:32:59 AM
i'm missing the black and white here....
