We drove for Lusaka all day on the 3rd, got here and spent a fruitless hour hunting for P, J’s friend.
Driving in was quite a shock. From huge, green, lush vistas to a filthy, polluted, slum-ridden city. High rises, congestion, cars belching fumes, glue sniffing street kids – generally unpleasant. We were not impressed. Yet it still felt more ‘African’ than Botswana. The people are very friendly and helpful. There’s a long stretch on the left as you drive in to Lusaka, where there are rock breakers working. Just on the side of the road. This would be people, men and boys, using hammers to break rocks. There seemed to be grades of gravel they were producing – perhaps it was passed down the line to the small gravel specialists. What an eye opener. Makes you feel stunningly lucky and spoiled.
Just saw a truck with one rear wheel on the left and two on the right. Odd.
